Properties

Colorless square, rectangular or prismatic crystals. Melting point 230~231°C (decomposition). Odorless, extremely bitter taste. Insoluble in water and ether, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol and chloroform, soluble in hot ethanol and glacial acetic acid. Relative density (d21) is 1- 231, specific optical rotation is -124.6. to -128.6. (glacial acetic acid). Usually a triacetyl derivative with a melting point of 126 to 127°C.

Method of Preparation

It is usually extracted from Andrographis paniculata stems and leaves. The crude powder of Andrographis paniculata stem and leaves is cold-impregnated with 95% ethanol, and the cold-impregnated solution is decolorized by refluxing with activated charcoal, and then filtered while it is still hot, and then the filtrate is concentrated to about 1/5 of the original volume and then added with cold water, and then stood to be crystallized, and then filtered to obtain the Andrographis paniculata lactone crude product. Then recrystallize with 95% ethanol to get the purer product. If you want to make pure product can be purified according to the following method. Wash the above product with chloroform in cold immersion (can remove the oxygen andrographolide), and recrystallize the insoluble material with 15 times the amount ( V/W) of 95% ethanol to get the pure product.

Uses

Andrographolide is an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, purging and detoxifying drug. It is suitable for the treatment of bacterial dysentery, acute gastroenteritis, mumps, tonsillitis, upper respiratory tract infection.
